Gerald Braybrook Passes

Gerald Braybrook, a veteran breeder, trainer and driver from Virden, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 at the Westman Nursing Home on May 7.

Several strokes over recent years had weakened his health, but he still enjoyed farm outings, watching videos and chatting about the good old days.

From a family of 14, he leaves behind only his youngest two siblings, Clarence (Ellen) and Ruth (Henuset). Also left to mourn are son Clayton (Glenda Giles), daughter-in-law Twyla and granddaughter Jessica (wife and daughter of late son Dale.) Special mention to ex-wife Dreda (Leonard Hill), who saw to his many needs in the last years, in his words, "an angel." Many members of the extended family were in the racing business and some still are.

Having his start with "Chucky" Lewis, he later worked for the infamous Wilbur Thompson. He raced in Blue Bonnets and Trois Rivieres, Quebec and Ladner, British Columbia, and almost every track in between. The Manitoba Great Western Circuit was his favourite. Winters in Winnipeg? Not so much!

Racing fans and colleagues will remember most his thrilling, seemingly impossible, come-from-behind finishes. Among his most cherished horses were the speedy little mare Brooks Joy (and her progeny), the successful stallion Byrds Albason, and the quirky and challenging Trapper Don.

He enjoyed training with Clayton in Saskatchewan up to 2007 and was proud to be included in the winner's circle last summer at Killarney, Manitoba.

Funeral service will be held Friday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church in Virden, Manitoba, in arrangement with Carscaddens Funeral Chapel.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Gerald Braybrook.
