Call Me Yours Cruises In WFR Feature
A change of scenery worked wonders for owner/breeder Stephen Gillard’s Call Me Yours, who used last second heroics to score the win Western Fair Raceway’s $15,200 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace Monday night
.
The four-year-old daughter of Your Nemesis, who hangs her harness bag in the barn of Steve Coulter, sat on a helmet for the majority of the mile before setting sail in deep stretch and posting the 1:57.4 for veteran teamster Dave Wall.
Call Me Yours used a :28-second final frame to propel her to the one-length decision over Just Her Way. Doober Hoozzitz was a bang-up third in the eight-mare affair. Headpoles R Us, who was sent off as the 9-5 favourite, finished fifth and thus had her six-race win streak snapped.
The victory improved Calls Me Yours’ 2009 record to 3-1-2 in eight starts. The lion’s share of the purse bumped her overall earnings to $176,850.
In other Monday action, Oakley Seelster survived a first-over journey en route to notching a 1:56.2 victory in the $12,800 Preferred-2 Pace for the tandem of trainer John Kennedy and driver Bruce Richardson.
The five-year-old son of Western Maverick, who is owned by Kennedy and partner Clayton Walmsely of Walkerton, ON, wore down pacesetter Grissini and drew off to win by nearly three lengths over Grand Bend Turbo. Risky Rich, who rode the winner’s cover, had to settle for the show dough.
Oakley Seelster now owns a 3-4-0 record in his first 10 starts of the season. The 17-time winner has banked $175,575 to date.
