Cold Finger Romps In Sires Stakes Final
Overwhelming favourite Cold Finger dominated his fellow B.C. sired four-year-olds winning the $25,000 stakes final featured on Sunday afternoon's harness racing card at Fraser Downs by double-digits for the red-hot Bill Davis stable.
Cold Fingers ($2.10) paced away from his rivals in the stretch to win the B.C. Sires Stakes Final by 16-1/2 lengths and shave more than two full seconds off his lifetime mark for owner Bryan Buchanan of Surrey, B.C.
Bred by Mark Anderson, the Power Of Art-Cool Cam Girl gelding led the gapped out field of five through fractions of :27.2, :56.4 and 1:26.2 en route to the 1:55.2 triumph. Starrbucks Lildude and Scott Knight were the best of the rest, following in second while Kootenay Harper and Travis Bowman finished third after getting around the breaker at the half, Jay Flight and Keith Clark, who ultimately finished a distant fifth. Fast Lane Prince was fourth for Rick White.
Cold Finger, a winner of just two of his previous 33 races, joined the Davis barn in March. The lion's share of the $25,000 purse, pushed his career earnings to nearly $70,000.
Another Davis trainee, Sterling Cooper ($3.10), returned to action after setting a 1:50.2 all-age track record on March 29 and was an easy winner in the $10,500 Open Handicap class.
The undeniable favourite shot to command from his outside assigned six-post and rolled through fractions of :27, :55.2 and 1:23.1 before hitting the wire 1:52 flat. Beren Hanover and Allan Molloy finished three-quarters of a length behind in second off a pocket trip while Lisvinnie, with Clark aboard, advanced into third.
Sterling Cooper, a seven-year-old gelded son of Camluck, now boasts six wins in eight starts since being claimed by Davis and Jeff Elchuk of Surrey, B.C. The victory was his 27th lifetime.
Davis also eked out a neck victory with Bettor In The Bank ($5.60) for a training triple and steered the Marcel Bouvier-trained sophomore colt Mitchell Blue Chip ($13.70) to victory to end the 12-race program with four driving scores.
