First Timer Goes Last To First
Things didn’t look too good for Lovely Erin for the first three-quarters of her pari-mutuel debut Thursday evening at Woodbine Racetrack, but an explosive kick in the lane helped propel the sophomore to an impressive-looking score for trainer Ron Adams.
The three-year-old daughter of Sportswriter-Lovely Lady got away ninth for driver Doug McNair, and the two would remain in that position through fractions of :28.1, :59 and 1:28.3. She was 17 lengths off the lead at the mid-way point of the mile, but she narrowed the deficit to nine lengths as the field headed into the final quarter of the contest.
Lovely Erin was angled to the far outside in the stretch, and McNair called on the filly to use a :27.4 kicker to prevail by a half-length margin over race favourite Regal Hurricane in 1:58.1. Third prize went to a rallying War Filly.
The $15,000 purchase from the 2013 Lexington Select Yearling Sale is owned by 1362312 Ontario Ltd of Windsor, Ontario. The filly has an impressive set of siblings in Wake Up Peter (1:48.3 - $877,826) and Arts Temptress (1:51.3 - $399,333).
