Putmeintogo Upsets In Preferred
Putmeintogo persisted on the front end and pulled off a 12-1 upset as she earned her first Preferred victory in Friday's $30,000 distaff feature at Woodbine Racetrack.
Robin Morley's homebred mare left from post five in rein to Sylvain Filion and secured the early lead through a :27.1 opening panel. Putmeintogo gave way briefly to the parked out Greystone Ladylike (Doug McNair) and then moved back out for the retake en route to the half-mile mark, which was reached in :55.3. She proceeded to lead the distaffers through three-quarters in 1:24.3 while Rubis Prescott (Paul MacDonell) advanced from fourth on the outside. The first over challenger leveled off in the stretch, but 3-5 favourite Marquise De Sarah (Jody Jamieson) and D Gs Pesquero (Jonathan Drury) kept the onlookers guessing as they closed late from the backfield to come within a half-length of the Putmeintogo, who hit the wire in 1:54.1. Greystone Ladylike finished a length behind in fourth and Rubis Prescott rounded out the top five finishers.
The win was the second in a row for Putmeintogo (Mach Three-Arizona Beach), who was also victorious in a top level conditioned race at Woodbine one week ago. The Richard Moreau trainee is now three-for-10 in her five-year-old campaign with $54,500 banked in purses -- just under a couple thousand dollars shy of matching her 2014 earnings already.
Putmeintogo returned $27.00 to her $2 backers.
Filion also won with first-time Moreau starter I Am Special ($5.80) in the evening's first race.
Meanwhile, Capelo ($5.50) continued his streak of being claimed for the fifth consecutive start (and sixth time in seven races). The four-year-old son of American Ideal scored a narrow 1:56.1 victory on Friday with Anthony MacDonald catch-driving for trainer David Russo and owner Stuart Oppenheimer. Capelo now has five wins and two third-place finishes in nine races this year with $27,280 earned in purses.
The popular pacer was claimed on Friday for $18,750, again by Rolling Hills Racing Stables, who had claimed him once before for the same price a month ago. The total value of his six claims amounts to $112,500.
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover for Saturday's card will be $771,804.95. Friday's winning combination of 2-6-8-3-7 paid $5,552.45 for a $1-based wager.
