Antique Standardbred Toy Is Valuable
If you’re big into the collecting of harness racing antiques, you could be in for a windfall if you come across a particular piece which apparently has quite a bit of value to it.
According to Terry and Kim Kovel, who are very highly respected members of the world of antiques, a vintage tin toy depicting Dexter, a son of Hambletonian, is worth a pretty penny if you are able to find one.
As a column by the Kovels explains, only one of the complete toys is known to be in existence today. The Dexter toy, which was made in the 1800s, features a tin depiction of the horse on a wheeled platform and also includes a rider, which can be removed.
The Kovels’ column states that one of the Dexter toys, minus the rider, was offered at a Bertoia auction in NJ for $1,500.
The column goes on to state that a complete Dexter tin toy (with the rider) is worth quite a bit more.
