Mach A Wish Tops Dover Distaffers
On the heels of back-to-back runner-up performances in Dover Downs’ Fillies & Mares Open Handicap, Mach A Wish grabbed all the marbles in Monday’s $18,000 main event for distaffers.
With Corey Callahan barking out orders from the bike, Mach A Wish got away fourth from the seven hole while Scootin For Joy and Handsoffmycookie took turns on the lead through first-half fractions of :26.2 and :55.1.
Callahan brushed his charge first-over in the third quarter, and they showed a short lead over Handsoffmycookie at the three-quarter pole in 1:24. A :29.2 closing panel was just enough for Mach A Wish to win by a neck over Fox Valley Hermia in 1:53.2. Taking home the show dough in the seven-horse affair was Flick A Fly.
Trainer Doug Lewis co-owns the six-year-old daughter of Mach Three-Belinda Hanover with CTC Stable of Chestnut Ridge, New York. The 20-time winner is closing in on $540,000 in career earnings.
