Russell Newman Passes
Services recently concluded for Russell Murray Newman, who passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 78.
Born in George’s River, N.S., he was the son of the late Arthur Embree and Beatrice (Dearing) Newman. Russell’s greatest passion in life was harness racing. He enjoyed travelling the Maritime Circuit racing his horses with good friends, Sandy MacLeod, Donnie Shepherd and Norman (Newf) Fiander. He also served as a member of the Maritime Harness Racing Commission for five years.
Russell was employed as a salesman for Eastern Food Packers, Kenmount Ford in Sydney and later owned and operated RN Auto Supply until his retirement. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, the church choir and was a Charter Member of the AOTS Men’s Club.
Russell is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Marina (Penny) Newman, his daughters, Karen (Alan) Jennex, Alison (Dan R.) MacDonald, his son David (Leslie Andrea) Newman, by the joys of his life, his grandchildren Geralyn and Patrick Jennex, Danielle, Hollie and Michael MacDonald, Jacob Newman and by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Max, Barsley and Arthur Newman, sisters Marie Bonnar, Grace Brown, Viola Walker and Genevieve MacEachern.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton, Victoria Order of Nurses or St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
