Wittup To Century Downs
Harness Racing BC Executive Director Jackson Wittup has announced that he will be leaving his post, as he has accepted the position of racing secretary at the new Century Downs racetrack in Balzac, Alberta, which is scheduled to open in March.
Wittup’s announcement has come via Tom Wolski’s ‘Hoss Talk’ column in The Province.
In speaking of leaving his position in BC, Wittup said he’s “enjoyed working with the horsemen.” He added that “being involved in the sport all my life, I understand their perspective. I also learned what a tough industry it is for them.”
Wittup’s new position with Century Downs allows the industry veteran to work close to his family in Alberta.
He also took the chance to reflect on some of the most memorable moments of his tenure with the HRBC. Wittup told Wolski that last November’s BC Breeders Classic Day and the ability to be involved in charitable ventures were some of his most cherished moments.
“It was great seeing small stables winning three out of the four major races on that day (BC Breeders Classic Day) — along with witnessing how horsemen supported several worthwhile charities, such as fundraisers to help those affected by a major barn fire early in the year.”
Wittup went on to say, “And there was the owners of Buddys Hope, who donated all his earnings in December to the Surrey Food Bank and the many others getting on board to support that charity. Those were memories you will never forget.”
