Hudon Drives For Charity
Driver Phil Hudon had a busy day during his guest appearance at Fraser Downs on Sunday, picking up cheques in nine of his 10 drives for charity.
The former Cloverdale resident, who left B.C. nearly 20 years ago to drive in Ontario, will donate his five per cent purse earnings from the Dec. 28 card at Fraser Downs to the Surrey Food Bank.
"It was awesome to be home. I won one race, earned a bunch of cheques and drove some bad," he laughed, "but it brought back a lot of memories. It was a lot of fun."
Hudon was victorious with Excessive in the $4,400 seventh race and the pacer's owner Bill Boden pledged to match the reinsman's donations for his horses. Hudon and Boden's Lizard King also finished second in the $10,500 Open to Fraser's 2014 leading horseman Bill Davis and Outlaw Beacon, a dominant wire-to-wire winner in 1:53.1 over the "good" track.
The Bouvier Stable agreed to match Hudon's donations as well for their horses, which includes earnings from St Lads Gabby Gal's fourth-place finish in the 10th race.
