Gracie Montana Gets Up In Time
Last second heroics by Gracie Montana helped her eke out a 1:54.4 score for trainer/driver Bill Davis in Friday’s $10,500 Fillies & Mares Open Pace at Fraser Downs.
Davis got away third from Post 3 with Gracie Montana, and she held that position through the opening half that saw Drawing Dead dole out fractions of :27 and :58. Drawing Dead was still in command at the three-quarter pole in 1:26.1, but things didn’t look so great for Gracie Montana who was trapped in and shuffled back to fifth heading into the final quarter of the contest.
The six-year-old daughter of Camluck-Sportstalk managed to find clearance, however, in the late stages of the mile and her :28-second closing quarter helped her earn the neck decision over Prairie Illusion. Just One More tagged along to grab the show dough in the six-mare affair.
Jeff & Debbie Elchuk of Surrey, British Columbia share ownership on the distaffer, who was sent off as the even-money favourite. The 38-time winner won for the fifth time in 33 starts this season. Her overall cash stash climbed over $328,000.
The victory was one of three training wins – and four driving tallies – for the O’Brien Award finalist.
