'Special' To Papa Ray; Six For Callahan
Papa Ray rushed along the backstretch to challenge leader Nova Artist before making the lead on the final turn on the way to a 1:52.2 victory in Thursday’s $25,000 Delaware Special at Dover Downs.
Eddie Davis, Jr. was at the controls of Papa Ray who won the week’s top pace for the second time in his last four outings for trainer Wayne Givens and owners Reg Hazzard II and Legacy Racing. So Take That closed fast to edge Mustang Art for the runner-up position.
Papa Ray, a five-year-old Village Jolt-Liamatters horse, won for the seventh time this season, with eight seconds and eight thirds earning $133,373 and $356,628 lifetime.
Corey Callahan also enjoyed a profitable day at the office thanks to a five-win performance on the 15-race program.
Callahan took Race 3 with Affluenza (1:55.2) before adding wins with Touchdown Mindale (Race 5 – 1:53.1), Handsome Henry K (Race 9 – 1:51), Cam B Zipper (Race 11 - 1:53.1) and Four Staces (Race 12 - 1:53.2).
