Equity Retired After Monday Tilt

Trot Insider has learned that the fans of veteran trotter Equity that tuned into Woodbine Racetrack's card of racing on Monday (December 1) watched the veteran eight-year-old race for the final time in his career.

Horseman Charalambos Christoforou, who also bred the bay, had let Trot Insider know that Equity’s tilt on Monday (Race 5, 8:45 p.m.) would be the last of his career, regardless of the outcome. “We will retire him tonight, wherever he finishes,” Christoforou said earlier on Monday.

Heading into Monday’s action, Equity, who has made 103 trips to the starting gate in his career, has notched 28 wins, 18 second-place finishes and 16 thirds. He took his mark of 1:52.1 over Mohawk Racetrack at age five and has banked over $822,000 in career purse earnings. His biggest win came in the 2009 Canadian Breeders Championship at Mohawk Racetrack in the midst of an eight-race win streak.

“He's a homebred. He's done very well for us. It's not that he's unsound. In fact, right now he looks the best that he's ever looked. I just don't want him to race below the top levels,” Christoforou told Trot Insider. “I'm going to retire him even if he wins tonight. He likes to get out of the stall and go jogging, he loves to stay busy.”

Equity is by Kadabra and is out of the millionaire Earl mare Earl Of My Dreams. He started from Post 1 in a $11,000 dash for conditioned trotters on Monday. Charalambos' son, driver Chris Christoforou, steered Equity for trainer Sandra Houghton. Equity was 6-1 on the morning line and faced the gate as the post-time choice. Equity trotted second along the rail for the first three quarters of the race, but the will of the full field was too much to hold off in the late stages of the dash. Equity just missed earning a cheque on Monday, as he finished sixth.

In speaking of Equity's post-racing days, Charalambos had told Trot Insider that, "We'll keep him on our farm, but I'd love to find him a home where he can do what he loves to do. I hate to throw him out in a paddock and not do anything. He loves it so much.

"Sandra Haughton has been so wonderful with him. They look after him like he's their own kid. They just love him. We all do."
