Zip The Lip Trots To Another Open Win
Zip The Lip did it again. The trot star, co-owned by trainer Donald Sweet and Orville Willis of O’Leary, notched his 12th win of the season after capturing the $1,850 Open feature in 2:07.1 over a 'sloppy' track on Sunday at Charlottetown Driving Park.
Brian MacPhee waited patiently before diving into the passing lane with the son of Ken Warkentin to chase down the leaders and post back-to-back victories. Caliban Hanover was the runner-up with the show ticket going to Diamond Mine.
Carnivore and Kenny Arsenault claimed the $2,000 top pacing class in 2:03.4 for Valleygrove Farms of Kensington. The Marvyn Webster trainee came back to on to beat Forever Paradise with the Big Bite third. Track announcer Vance Cameron picked the 1-4-5 triactor in the pre-race interview.
Jason Hughes had another big day with four winners. The “Blue Knight” started the afternoon program winning the first three races putting him back in the lead of the Charlottetown driver standings.
The Hughes parade began with a catch-driving score aboard New School, followed by a gate-to-wire romp with Virginonthebeach. Jersey Joe battled back to catch the field to give the Stratford, P.E.I. native the triple. The grand-slam came with C L La Rousse.
For All We Know recorded her third win in a row taking the $2,250 Mares Open in 2:04.2 for driver Gary Chappell, trainer Jackie Matheson and owner Bruce Wood. Her stablemate, General Luckypercy (Ron Matheson), was second while A Fiesty X Ample (Mark Bradley) rallied late for a third-place finish.
Chappell and Walter Cheverie had driving doubles on the program.
The annual Horse Person’s Day is Saturday, November 29. Post time is 1 p.m. The afternoon features a driver’s championship, second chance draws and prize giveaways.
