Rookies Impress In Autumn Series
Baudron and Robert Hill captured their respective Autumn Series finals Thursday evening at Woodbine Racetrack, as the Rexdale, Ontario oval put the spotlight on freshmen trotters and pacers.
Baudron pulled off a huge upset in the $33,600 Autumn Series final for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings. The rookie erupted for a 70-1 stunner for trainer/driver Riina Rekila.
The homebred son of Infinitif-B Cor Tanya got away ninth from Post 1, but he made steady gains on the rim in the final three-quarters of the rich tilt. Namesmuscle was the leader through panels of :27.2, :57.1 and 1:28.2, but he couldn’t fend off Baudron who swept up three-wide coming out of the final turn. Baudron then used a :29.1 closing quarter to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Olympic Son. Rubber Duck came on late to grab the show dough. The 1:58 performance matched Aventure’s series record.
Bred and owned by Overseas Farms Ltd of Campbellville, Ontario, Baudron won for the first time in 11 starts. The $16,800 payday bumped the rookie’s bankroll to $23,890.
Robert Hill pushed his winning streak to four-in-a-row thanks to his come-from-behind score in the $35,800 Autumn Series final for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. Following 1:55.4 and 1:54.2 victories in the preliminary legs, Robert Hill led the field to the quarter in :27.3 before getting covered up in the middle stages of the mile. He sprung loose late and used a :29-second kicker to win by half a length in 1:54. The Battle Begins was second, with J Js Delivery taking home third prize.
Tony Alagna trains the son of Jeremes Jet-Smooth Latin N for Tom Hill of Lancashire, England. Hill has entered the five-time winner into the mixed portion of this year’s Harrisburg Sale. The colt is scheduled to sell as Hip 1637 during Saturday’s closing session. He’ll do so with a bankroll that now stands at $64,050.
