Maritime Breeders Eliminations Set

Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park will play host to the Maritime Breeders Eliminations for trotters on Saturday (October 18).

Post time for the 12-dash card is 6 p.m.

Southfield Shadow is the morning line favourite in the first MBA split for driver Terry Gallant, trainer Thane Mann and the ownership group of Southfield Farms Inc, Summerside. The three-year-old filly was scratched for the Atlantic Breeders Crown final, but prior to that she had back-to-back wins and seasonal earnings of $14,595. Dusty Lane Galaxy, who has eight top-three finishes from nine starts this season, could knock off the favourite from Post 5 for driver Gary Chappell. The line-up also includes Villager, Phantom Beau, Waiting On No One and Glencove Yoshi.

The other Maritime Breeders Elimination has BJ Commanche as the one to beat. The colt is owned and trained by Bert Honkoop of Montague. Clare MacDonald will drive from Post 2.

MacDonald drove the trotter to a fourth-place result in the Atlantic Breeders Crown final after having been roughed up early on the outside to the opening quarter in 30.1 seconds. Incredibility, from the Earl Watts stable, and JK Hustler, who has two wins this campaign, are also listed as possible triactor candidates. Dunmore Bravo, Saulsbrook Pippa and Majian Magic will also compete in the $3,000 event.

The evening’s top class (Race 12) will see local heavyweights All Turain (to be driven by Mike Stevenson), Astor (Jason Hughes) and Touch Of Lightning square off. The field is loaded with talent, including Cabo Pan Lucas, trained by Gary Poulton, starting from Post 4 for driver Vince Poulton. The seven-year-old has been sharp and has finished in the top three 14 times from 23 starts for co-owner Alan Walker, Charlottetown. Shock The Rock, Carnivore, Eagle Jolt and Cheyenne Ford are also part of the line-up.

Rash B Havior will make a trip west to Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway on Sunday to compete in the afternoon’s feature (Race 11). The program will get underway at 1 p.m.

The son of Lis Mara, owned by Michael Peters, Emyvale, will get the services of Walter Cheverie in the power-packed field and is coming in off of impressive victories, including a four-length score in 1:56.2. He’ll go up against two Jason Hughes stable stars, Cambest Kisser and Narragansett. Hughes, who had a driving triple on Thursday, is compiling another big season. Carrera Angel will get reunited with his owner, Rocky Schurman, from Post 5. This combination has been hot, having taken the top class in back-to-back fashion in September. DBS Rosco has been entered with Mark Bradley driving for trainer Wendell Shaw and co-owners Robbie Shaw and Derek Folland. Lucky Enounter drew the rail for Norris Rogers, trainer Dale Sobey and owner Jeff Ferrish, Summerside.

In other action, Tammysmist has gotten the nod in the Cecil Stewart Memorial (Race 2) for Cheverie and owner-trainer Ken Waite. The filly caught the field to post a big win in her last start after coming in off a qualifier.

The Lea Bell Memorial will headline the afternoon’s trot class (Race 4). Zip The Lip will be going for five wins in a row. Driver Brian MacPhee has engineered all the winning trips against some of the best trotters on the east coast. Zip The Lip will be making his 21st start this season for trainer Don Sweet and his co-owner Orville Willis of O’Leary. Newcomer Money Show will lead the post parade for driver Brian Andrew, followed by Frill Seeker, Pleasure Girls, Majian Dillon, Majian Chester and Caliban Hanover.
