What A Finish!

The opening night program of the fall/winter meet at Woodbine Racetrack had a little bit of everything on Thursday evening including a blockbuster finish in the feature race.

Dancehall Mistress came away with a nose decision in the $34,000 Preferred Trot – an affair that saw four horses finish within a neck of one another.

Randy Waples hustled Dancehall Mistress into an early four-hole while Whiskey Tax shot to the top and carved out an opening panel of :26.4. Take My Picture brushed out of the three-hole in the backstretch, and he cleared without a tussle before laying out middle panels of :57 and 1:26.2. He drifted off the rail in the lane, however, and that’s when things got very interesting.

Dancehall Mistress knifed her way through traffic in the late stages of the mile, and he :27.3 closing quarter was just enough to earn her the nose decision over Swan In A Million and race favourite Charmed Life. Whiskey Tax was a neck back in fourth.

David Goodrow Stable, Doug Millard and Glenn Tarver share ownership on the five-year-old daughter of Angus Hall-Benns Riverdance, who was sent off at odds of 13-1 in the seven-horse affair. Brad Maxwell trains the 14-time winner, who is now 5-for-15 this season. She’s banked in excess of $70,000 this season and more than $300,000 to date.
