Ok Ebury Prevails In Wild Finish
Ok Ebury prevailed in a blanket finish to post a 13-1 upset in the co-featured $6,500 Winners Over Handicapped Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday night.
The field of nine horses was spread across just two and a quarter lengths at the finish with Ok Ebury winning in 1:55.3. The son of Modern Art was driven by Sylvain Lacaille for trainer/owner Luc Loyer of Gatineau, Que.
Chasin Racin led the field through fractions of :26.4, :56.1 and 1:25.1 with Ok Ebury following in the pocket and Thundering Bay applying heavy first over pressure the entire way. As they rounded the final turn, Zambuca Gass, caught three-wide most of the mile, moved up into contention with favourite Beach Runner A M following that move and fanning four-wide and Mister Icon closing on the far grandstand side. Down the stretch, Ok Ebury gained the slight advantage as he closed up the passing lane and defeated Chasin Racin by a head. Beach Runner A M and Zambuca Gass finished a neck behind while Mister Icon edged out Onyx V A, who also closed along the pylons, a half-length back for the final paycheque.
Ok Ebury earned the third victory of his five-year-old campaign and 11th lifetime, lifting his career bankroll to $120,068. He paid $29.80 to win.
It was a different story in the matching Winners Over Trot as the mare, Out Of The Hat, dominated wire-to-wire for a two and a quarter length victory in 1:55.4 with trainer/driver Stephane Pouliot. She paid $7.60 to win as the second choice. Rocky Boy followed in second with favourite Decret Justiciale advancing into third. The five-year-old Kadabra mare shaved one full second off her lifetime mark while picking up her 32nd career win. She is owned by Meadowgem Farm of Osgoode, Ont. and 9096 9205 Quebec Inc. of St Henri de Levis, Que
