Shepherd: I'll Be Ready For Summer

Mary Ormsby of The Toronto Star has spoken with Robert Shepherd, injured in the March 2 accident

at Woodbine Racetrack, regarding his progress and cheating death twice in one week.

Shepherd broke his right leg in the incident -- which received a wealth of mainstream media attention -- and also had to deal with another frightening development.

Ormsby's article explains that fatty marrow globules had escaped from Shepherd's broken tibia and began attacking his lungs. As a result, Shepherd couldn't breathe properly and remained in intensive care, heavily sedated and on oxygen, until he was stable.

A titanium rod and screws were surgically inserted into Shepherd's leg. The young reinsman is itching to get back on the track. "I'll be ready for (the) summer (standardbred season) if I have anything to do with it," he said.
