Elimination Mania To Hit Mohawk
Many of the sport’s brightest stars will be on display Saturday evening at Mohawk Racetrack as the Campbellville, Ontario oval hosts eliminations for the Canadian Pacing Derby, the Metro Pace and the Shes A Great Lady Stake.
Twelve of racing’s heaviest hitters will spar in a set of eliminations for the Canadian Pacing Derby including the hottest pacer on the planet, Sweet Lou. In search of a tenth straight victory, the Ron Burke-trained five-year-old son of Yankee Cruiser-Sweet Future enters the six-horse affair fresh off his 1:47.2 win in the $258,000 Dan Patch Invitational at Hoosier Park. Ron Pierce gets to work from Post 2 with the triple millionaire.
He’ll take on his stablemate, Foiled Again (Post 6), and former Pepsi North America Cup winner, Thinking Out Loud (Post 1), in the $40,000 affair.
The second Canadian Pacing Derby elimination features a host of top performers including last year’s Pepsi North America Cup champ, Captaintreacherous (Post 5), and this year’s Molson Pace champ, State Treasurer (Post 3).
Captaintreacherous notched a confidence-boosting victory in 1:50.1 versus Preferred foes at Mohawk Racetrack last Saturday evening for the tandem of driver Tim Tetrick and trainer Tony Alagna. State Treasurer, on the other hand, was on the receiving end of a brutal trip that led to an eighth-place finish in the Dan Patch Invitational on August 8 at Hoosier Park. He’ll to get back on track for driver Chris Christoforou and trainer Dr. Ian Moore.
The runner-up from the Dan Patch Invitational, Bettors Edge (Post 2) and Ellis Park (Post 1), a stalwart in WEG’s Preferred ranks, will also face the gate in the second elimination.
The top five finishers from each elimination advance to next week’s final, and the elimination winners earn their connections the privilege to pick a post for the rich final.
Fourteen freshmen from this year’s crop of colts and geldings are separated into a set of Metro Pace eliminations, and again it will be the top five finishers advancing to next week’s rich final.
Sports Bettor, who pulled off a 69-1 upset in his division of the Nassagaweya Stakes last Saturday evening, will depart from Post 7 in the first elimination for the team of driver Randy Waples and trainer Mark Austin. The son of Sportswriter-Shellys Delight has banked more than $77,000 in six starts this season.
He’ll take on the likes of Lyons Levi Lewis (Post 1), the Well Said colt he beat by a neck in last week’s Nassagaweya Stakes division, in addition to this year’s Battle Of Waterloo champ, Go Daddy Go (Post 2), who was a lapped-on second in his division of the Nassagaweya Stakes last Saturday at Mohawk.
All eyes will be on Artspeak in the second elimination. The undefeated son of Western Ideal-The Art Museum, who was a handy winner in his Nassagaweya Stakes division last Saturday, totes a 4-for-4 record into the rich tilt for driver Scott Zeron and Tony Alagna. He’s drawn Post 5 in the seven-horse affair.
He’ll face Traceur Hanover (Post 7), who has put together a 3-1-0 record from four lifetime starts for driver Randy Waples and trainer Normand Bardier, Jr. The son of Western Ideal-Transference prevailed by a narrow margin in his division of the Nassagaweya Stakes last Saturday at Mohawk.
Three eliminations will be required to decide the ten finalists for this year’s Shes A Great Lady Stake, with the top three finishers and one fourth-place finisher – drawn by lot – advancing to the final.
The first elimination features a rubber match between Shakai Hanover and Bedroomconfessions, who were noses apart in their division of the Eternal Camnation Stakes at Mohawk last Saturday evening. Shakai Hanover halted the teletimer in 1:52.4 for driver Jody Jamison and trainer Carl Jamieson with Bedroomconfessions hot on her heels for driver Scott Zeron and trainer Tony Alagna.
JK Shesalady, who turned in a dazzling victory in her division of the Eternal Camnation Stakes last weekend, has drawn Post 5 in the second elimination for the team of driver Yannick Gingras and trainer Nancy Johansson. The daughter of Art Major-Presidential Lady is a perfect 4-for-4 going into the $35,000 affair.
She’ll butt heads with Solar Sister (Post 1), who also posted a win last weekend in a division of the Eternal Camnation Stakes, and Well Hello There (Post 6), who has banked over $115,000 in her freshman season thanks in large part to multiple wins in the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes program.
The final elimination will feature a battle between the undefeated Band Of Angels (Post 6) and the previously undefeated Happy Becky (Post 7).
Band Of Angels is 5-for-5 following a 1:55.2 win versus NYSS foes at Yonkers Raceway on August 14. Ron Burke trains the photogenic daughter of Rock N Roll Heaven-Time N Again and Yannick Gingras is schedule to be the filly’s pilot.
Happy Becky, who was 4-for-4 going into last weekend’s division of the Eternal Camnation Stakes for trainer Casie Coleman, will look to rebound from a third-place finish in her most recent performance. The daughter of Cams Card Shark-Happy Doris, who will be driven by co-owner David Miller, has banked more than $46,000 to date.
