Spirit To Win Prevails In Pure Ivory
Southwind Champane drew first blood in the Pure Ivory Series thanks to a 1:56.3 one week ago, but Spirit To Win won Monday’s rubber match at Mohawk Racetrack.
Chris Christoforou couldn’t track down Southwind Champane last week, but he sailed by that foe – who made a deep stretch break – to win the lone, $12,000 division on Monday’s 12-race card at the Campbellville, Ontario oval.
Spirit To Win was treated to a two-hole trip behind Southwind Champane, who stole away with soft panels of :30.2, 1:01.2 and 1:31.1 before going into sprint mode over the final two furlongs of the eight-furlong affair. Spirit To Win rallied out of the pocket and used a :27-second closing quarter to win by two lengths over Southwind Champane. Elegant Serenity rounded out the top three finishers.
Dustin Jones trains the homebred daughter of Cantab Hall-Celebrity Spirit for owner/breeder Fred Hertrich III and partner Noblock Racing Stable. The two-year-old improved her record to 2-1-0 from three starts with the victory.
The $45,800 final of the Pure Ivory Series is scheduled for Monday, August 18 at Mohawk Racetrack.
