Weekend Stakes Drawn

Three Canadian racetracks will be playing host to stakes events that are co-sponsored by Standardbred Canada this weekend. The fields for the Emerald Filly and the Lady Crocus Stakes, and the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series have been drawn and the races are all set to go.

The connections of 10 two-year-old pacing fillies have entered their charges to contest the Emerald Filly Stakes, which will be contested Saturday at Alberta Downs. Two $22,500 divisions have been drawn and each will feature a field of five.

The first division (Race 4) will see the Travis Cullen-trained and driven Fire Watch look to extend her career unbeaten streak to three. The Camystic-Raging Red Head bay erased a large early deficit in her last race and got up to record a three-quarters of one-length victory in 1:59.1. Fire Watch has been pegged at odds of 4-1 on the morning line.

Blue Star Texas is the most experienced filly in the field for the second division (Race 5). Saturday’s tilt will be the fourth career race for the daughter of Brandons Cowboy-Movin Uptown. She most recently prevailed in 1:58.2 on July 19. Trainer Keith Clark usually performs the driving duties, but he will be steering one of his other fillies in the race (Cam Finish). Clark has called on Philip Giesbrecht to drive Blue Star Texas on Saturday.

Dirt Road Anthem has been installed as the odds-on, 1-5 morning line favourite for the first of the ‘Crocus’ divisions (Race 2). The daughter of Armbro Baylor-Pontchatula has won two of her three career starts and will start from Post 1. She will be looking to rebound from a loss on July 20 in which she made a break in the late goings and finished third. Donald Howlett will perform the driving duties for trainer Richard Rey.

Mexican Maid has been installed as the heavy 1-5 morning line favourite in the second of the Crocus divisions (Race 3). Trainer Darryl Mason will drive the daughter of Armbro Baylor-Tequila Lullaby from Post 1. The bay has won six of her nine career races and is unbeaten so far this season.

Trainer Jackie Matheson has entrusted the driving duties to Gilles Barrieau. The duo will start from Post 4 in the field of eight. The career winner of 17 dashes is carrying a two-race win streak into the test and will be searching for her fifth seasonal victory.

A field of seven will contest the second division (Race 11) and Icandothat has been given the 5-2 nod on the morning line. The four-year-old No Pan Intended mare has drawn the rail and will be steered by her trainer, Ryan Ellis. The lass has won eight of her 26 career starts and is coming in off a neck win at Summerside Raceway on July 19.
