Mare Beats Boys At Summerside
Racing returned to Red Shores' Summerside on Wednesday night after a successful Governor's Plate Week. The story in the evening’s top class was about a mare that beat the boys.
Ultimate Faith had the odds stacked against her, seeing as though she was one of only two mares in the evening’s feature race. Nevertheless, driver Marc Campbell gunned her to the front off the gate before letting the fraction-setter, Lucky Encounter, clear to the lead.
Off a perfect two-hole trip, Campbell pulled Ultimate Faith out at the head of the stretch and got his lass up for the victory in 1:58.2 for owner Able Arsenault and trainer Philip Desroches. Lisfinny was second, Lucky Encounter, who cut the fractions in :29, :58.2 and 1:28.1, fading to finish third. Ultimate Faith paid $40.40 to win, $36.30 to place and $5.60 to show.
Dialamara caught the eyes of many in Race 2, as he recorded a 1:59.3 win in what was his maiden voyage. In the race, the two-year-old Lis Mara-Ladysai colt re-took the lead just past the quarter, cut the fractions in :30.3, 1:01 and 1:31.1 and sprinted home in :28.3 to record the victory for owner Doug Mac Phee and trainer Tom Weatherbie. The colt’s driver, Jason Hughes, recorded two wins during the card.
Racing will return to Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park on Thursday night after a week of darkness due to the Governor's Plate. The card will feature Hurrah For Island Charities. First-race post time for the card is 7 p.m.
