‘No Contest’ Mars Stakes-Filled Card
A scary set of events turned a division of the Atlantic Sires Stakes for two-year-old pacing fillies into a ‘No Contest’ during Tuesday evening’s card of racing at Truro Raceway.
Dusty Lane Milly made a break early in the mile and set off a chain reaction of interference to trailing horses. Reports indicate two horses unseated their drivers and ran loose prompting the Judges to declare the race a ‘No Contest’. The loose horses were eventually caught, and both avoided serious injuries. All of the drivers in the race came away unscathed, as well.
Tyne Valley kicked off the card with a 2:09 triumph in her $8,420 division of the ATSS for two-year-old trotters. Mike Stevenson, who celebrated his 1,500th win in the process, mapped out the winning trip for the daughter of Northern Bailey-Tymal Maroma. She defeated the race favourite, Bayriver, and Wait For Me.
Bill Roloson of Belfast, PEI bred owns and trains the career winner of $5,994. She was purchased for $2,700 from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale.
Paymenowpaymelater rolled to a 2:06.2 triumph in the second division. The daughter of Northern Bailey-Credibility drew clear to win by 5-1/4 lengths over Dusty Lane Jewel. Third prize was earned by Windemere Ty.
Kenny Arsenault engineered the winning trip for the Earl Watts pupil, who has posted two wins in as many tries for owner Wade Peconi of Stanchel, PEI. The winner of $7,758 was purchased for $6,700 from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale.
Saulsbrook Pippa won her $8,360 division of the ATSS in gate-to-wire fashion for driver Corey MacPherson. The three-year-old daughter of PJs Nabby-Gabby Yankee drew clear to win by 4-1/2 lengths over Dusty Lane Galaxy in 2:03.1. Third prize was earned by Dunmore Chance.
It was the second win of the season – and the sixth to date – for the career winner of $15,443. Trainer John Pineau of Hunter River, PEI shares ownership on the sophomore with Myron Ford of Harrington, PEI.
B J Comanche nabbed his first win of the season in the other split for three-year-old trotters, and he did so in style for trainer Clare MacDonald. The son of Bo W-High And Flighty was a front-stepping victor in a time of 2:02.3. The colt defeated Villager and Glencove Yoshi.
Trainer Bert Honkoop of Montague, PEI owns and the trains the stakes winner, who has yet to finish worse than second in three starts this season. His 1-2-0 record when added to last year’s 4-1-0 record from 10 tries has translated into career earnings in excess of $20,000.
The program also featured three $7,300 ‘A’ divisions for two-year-old pacing fillies and the winners were Dusty Lane Bria (2:00.3), Three Pink Bows (2:02.4) and Woodmere Articblue (2:00.2).
