St. John's 2014 Racing Season Begins
The 2014 season of live harness racing began at St. John's Racing and Entertainment Centre in Goulds, N.L. with the driver/trainer team of Brad and Scott Forward kicking off the Sunday action.
Bill and Christine Hedges' seven-year-old pacer Victors Passion won the afternoon's first race for the Forwards, who joined forces for a triple on the opening day card.
The duo "bookended" the seven-race program, also winning the featured Preferred class with Inspired Art. Owned by Elizabeth Courtney, nine-year-old gelding Inspired Art earned his 30th career win, scoring by nearly seven lengths in 2:03.3 over Newfoundland's 2013 Horse of The Year Muzzysenglishbaby. Inspired Art was named Best Newcomer last year after arriving on the scene in September and winning three of his five starts, including the fastest race of the season, timed in 2:01.
Team Forward also picked up a victory mid-card in the fourth race with Oral Jestican's six-year-old gelding Stoveonfire.
Trainer/driver Robert Forward Jr. won the sixth race with Roberto, defeating Brad and Scott's Go For It.
Other winners on opening day were Action Powerful and William Taylor, Bossy Flossy and Paul McDonald, and Canadian Mint and Colin Sheppard.
Harness racing continues next Sunday, July 13 with first race post time set for 2 p.m. The full 2014 racing schedule is available here.
