Narrow Victory For Spartan Victory
Winkys Pride did all the road work in Friday’s $11,000 Preferred 2 for trotters at Grand River Raceway, but when the dust settled it was Spartan Victory who got all the marbles.
Ryan Holliday got away fourth with Spartan Victory, and they remained in that spot through first-half fractions of :28 and :57.4, which were set by Winkys Pride. That tempo-setter was still in charge at the three-quarter pole in 1:27.4, but Spartan Victory was first-over and pressing the leader. Spartan Victory only needed a :31-second closing quarter to win by a neck over Stolen Goods in 1:58.4. Heres The Magic took home the show dough in the eight-horse affair.
Brad Pittock of London, Ontario owns and trains the seven-year-old son of Hard Rock N Roll-Kandys Kelsey, who won for the fifth time this season and for the 19th time in his career. The lion’s share of the loot boosted his bankroll to $142,444.
Earlier on the card it was Oaklea Sydney going gate-to-wire in a time of 2:00 in the $7,000 Preferred 3 for trotters. Bob McClure hustled the mare to the top and together they led the field through intervals of :27.4, :57.4 and 1:28.1 before cruising home in :31.4 and picking up the win by 1-1/2 lengths. Leslie Road was second under the line, with Lexus Hawkeye taking home the show dough.
Trainer Paul Reid co-owns the seven-year-old daughter of Oaklea Julian-Carscot Lou for with Scott Maracle of Brantford, Ontario. The win was the 22nd of her career and it helped boost her bankroll to $186,074.
