Top Mares To Butt Heads At The CDP

Veronicavermillion will look to take down six rivals in the Race 11 feature Thursday night at Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park.

Veronicavermillion is the morning line favourite from Post 4 in the $2,250 Fillies and Mares Open. Brodie MacPhee will drive the eight-year-old daughter of Million Dollar Cam for owner Alex MacPhee of Clyde River and trainer Neil Bambrick.

Veronicavermillion will have to battle a deep group of mares with newcomer Andro Madi drawing the outside Post 7 for driver Dale Spence after racing the Mares Preferred at the Western Fair District in London, Ont. Post 2 starter JK Special, who will have Walter Cheverie in the bike, is riding a two-race win streak. The nine-year-old daughter of Cammibest has been one of the toughest Open mares in Atlantic Canada the past four years.

Other entries include Donna Conda (to be driven by Mike McGuigan), Cool One (Mike Stevenson), General Luckypercy (Ron Matheson) and Silky Britches (Marc Campbell).

The back-up pace goes in Race 7 as the Allie Campbell Birthday pace for a purse of $1,600. The daughter of O’Brien Award winning horseman Marc Campbell, Allie turns five years old on Thursday and has a solid chance at seeing her father in the winner’s circle celebrations as Campbell sends his own trainee, Eagle Jolt, out as the morning line favourite from Post 2. Eagle Jolt was racing in the U.S. for trainer Mark Ford, pacing his last start in 1:53.3 at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania. His main competition will come from Panda Bear (Stevenson) and Narragansett (Jason Hughes).

The evening trot class lines up in Race 3 for a $1,150 purse. The field of eight includes Dunmore Alpha (Ted Smallwood), Diamond Mine (Willie Murphy) and Glencove Umay (Stevenson).
