Lucy Lucy Takes Pompano Feature
With a bold three-wide move coming to the three-quarter mile marker, Lucy Lucy and driver Anthony Napolitano were able to collar race leaders Chapsboots N Spurs and Pasta Lavista to win the $16,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace on Tuesday evening at Pompano Park.
The third race feature saw newcomer Pasta Lavista scoot to the opening quarter in :28 seconds, but that lead was short lived. Chapsboots N Spurs brushed to the front in the second quarter and took the field to the mid-way point in :56 seconds.
But biding her time in fifth place in the backstretch was Lucy Lucy and before the final turn Napolitano cut her loose at the three-quarter pole, which was reached in 1:24.4. The five-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Tough Sir, who was recently voted the Older Mare of the Year in Florida , was up to the challenge.
Grinding it out against the race leaders down the stretch, it took the photo finish camera to declare Lucy Lucy the winner by a head over Chapsboots N Spurs. Pasta Lavista was third in the featured affair, which was clocked in 1:53.3.
It was the second win of the season for Kim Sears trainee. Kim shares ownership on the mare with her husband, Jay.
