'Caliban' Edges Out Abundaspin In Open
Caliban Hanover knocked off the top trotters in Atlantic Canada on Sunday at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
In line to Corey MacPherson, Caliban Hanover sat in the pocket as the streaking 14-year-old Abundaspin (Harold Shepherd) carved out fractions of :30.2, 1:01.1 and 1:31.3 in the $1,550 Open Handicap. MacPherson then powered forward with Caliban Hanover to win a nose decision in 2:01.4. Abundaspin was second with Lyrical Lindy (Gilles Barrieau) third. Caliban Hanover is owned by Wendell MacDonald of Cornwall, P.E.I. and trained by Ron Gass.
MacPherson had a driving triple on the card, winning with 70-1 longshot Classic Lorenzo in 2:00.4 for owner Devon Wallace of Alberton, P.E.I. and Dusty Lane Dora in 2:01.3 for owner Gass.
Onehotvett captured the afternoon's feature pace in 1:59.3 for owner/trainer/driver Wade Sorrie of Montague, P.E.I. Leaving from post three in the race 11 $1,800 pace, Onehotvett had a two-hole ride through the first two panels of :29.3 and :59.4 with Bet The House (Walter Cheverie) laying out the fractions. Sorrie vacated the rail at the 1:29.2 three-quarters when Lucky Encounter (Alex Sobey) took over the lead. Onehotvett got up for a length decision over Lucky Encounter while Toad River (Ken Murphy) was third.
Driver Terry Gallant and trainer Thane Mann both scored doubles. Total wager for the 12-dash card was $14,281.
