Lynne Magee has it
Lynne Magee has it absolutely correct. Also Mr. Rankin was not murdered because he had it wrong but rather because he had it right!
One more black mark against
One more black mark against our industry!
It is pretty clear to most people that the death of Mr. Rankin is likely related to his outspoken thoughts and theories regarding the troubles that plague harness racing. He always claimed to have damning information that could do our industry and some players in particular a great deal of damage. Whether he did or not, we will never know. The person who killed him was not an amatur. Organized crime, hired gun to shut him up? There are far too many criminal connections to horse racing that tarnish this sport/industry and too many people using those connections for their own purposes or just turning a blind eye to this deviant behaviour. Perhaps they anticipate a similar treatment as Mr. Rankin received or simply don't care enough about saving an industry that is ripe with corruption and cheating. The horses, to them, are merely pawns in the game.
There are many hard-working, honest people in this game but the cheaters are stealing the purse money and driving the fans/bettors away. They are also driving the honest horsepeople out. The stands are almost empty and the bettors are in the slot parlours. What will become of horseracing?
Mr. Rankin was intent on exposing the criminal aspect of horseracing. He may not have always been 100% right and may not have always gone about things the correct way but he was certainly effective in getting people's attention. Unfortunately, he got the attention of the wrong person or people.
May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted with the knowledge that he gave a damn about horseracing and horses and wasn't afraid to speak out.
