A Midnite Romp In Count B Final; Ontario Girls Face Off
Midnite Romp converted from a perfect covered trip to capture the $52,400 Final of The Count B Pacing Series for three-year-old colts and geldings at Woodbine Racetrack on Friday night
.
With regular driver Rick Zeron at the controls, the son of Million Dollar Cam - Late Nite Out was taken off the early speed and watched as My Gift To You (Paul MacDonell) blasted out from Post 10 to take the field past the first station in :27 seconds.
As the field straightened up towards the half, round-one winner Herestopatrick (Randy Waples) made a quick move out from fourth and took over the lead right at the half in :55.2. At that point, Artists Rally (Mark MacDonald) came to the outside from fifth and moved up to challenge the pacesetter at the three-quarters in 1:24.
Herestopatrick remained determined and fought off the first-over challenge but then had to brace for Midnite Romp who had followed the outside flow to the top of the stretch. Once clear, Midnite Romp easily powered past Herestopatrick to win by 3-1/4 lengths.
Herestopatrick did manage to salvage the place spot with longshot Allamerican Motive (Roger Mayotte) finishing third. The winner returned $8.50 for the win.
It was the third career victory for Midnite Romp who had also tallied in last week’s second leg of the series. The victory improved his career purse winnings to just over $56,000 for trainer David Gibson and owners David Goodrow Stable of Cambridge and Glenn Tarver of Scarborough, Ontario.
The Three Of Us and D M Marion both emerged victorious in Friday’s opening leg of the Ontario Girls Pacing Series for four-year-olds at Woodbine Racetrack.
The Three Of Us easily captured the first $20,000 split in wire-to-wire fashion for driver Roger Mayotte in 1:54.4. The daughter of Mach Three - Smooth Crossing scored by four lengths over Paper Cut (Phil Hudon) and Lucky Margie (Luc Ouellette).
It was the second straight victory for the Bob Young trainee and lifted her career earnings to just over $84,000 for owner Bruce Davy of Brockville, Ontario.
In the second division, D M Marion was able to survive a long uncovered bid in the final half to prevail by three-quarters of a length for driver Jason Brewer in 1:55.3. The daughter of Rambaran - Catcan turned back Windsong Experanza (Mark MacDonald) and Onehotvett (Jack Moiseyev) for the win.
It was the third trip to the winner’s circle this season in four tries for the Ronnie MacLean trainee and increased her career bankroll to just over $41,000 for the Glory B Stables Inc. and Connie Baker of London, Ontario.
