Luchento's NJ Green Space Vision
SBOANJ President Tom Luchento has penned a column calling for the state to help preserve open space in New Jersey – at no cost to the taxpayer – by introducing casino expansion to the Meadowlands.
Luchento’s column in the Asbury Park Press explains that, ‘The anticipated $500 million annual tax on casino gaming at the Meadowlands Racetrack would be the answer, along with the more than $200 million annually paid in state, local and federal taxes by the horse industry.’
Luchento goes on to say that a portion of taxes derived from casino gaming at the Meadowlands could be earmarked for the state’s Green Acres and Farmland Preservation programs. According to Luchento, the structure would, therefore, not see businesses and individuals pick up the tab to protect state green space. Luchento’s vision would then see the green space thrive due to a strong, vast equine presence in the state.
