Hunch players at Woodbine Racetrack on Thursday evening had to know there was something magical about driver Paul MacDonell

and a horse that had the word “Beach” in its name.

After a whirlwind, two-year campaign with the one-of-a-kind Somebeachsomewhere, MacDonell found himself paired up with a three-year-old filly named Bath Beach in this evening’s $46,300 final of the Miss Vera Bars Pacing Series. And just like Somebeachsomewhere did so many times in his sensational career, Bath Beach didn’t disappoint.

In fact, the daughter of Life Sign roared from the back of the bus to take home top prize in tonight’s Mega City main event – mowing down her rivals in a time of 1:55.4 for trainer Dean Nixon, who conditions the homebred for Iris & Harry Horowitz and their partner Mary Friest.

Real Heart rolled the field to the quarter pole in :26.3 before being looped by Artists Dynasty, who wound up chopping out middle splits of :55.2 and 1:24.3. Those panels eventually caught up with the pacesetter, and so did a host of challengers from the backfield.

MacDonell, who was still sitting seventh at the three-quarter pole with Bath Beach, tipped his charge off cover and used a :29-second final frame to seal the deal. Longshot Chief Karen came on late to grab the runner-up award and Wish All You Want settled for the show dough.

The victory was the third in five starts this season for Bath Beach, who now boasts $36,120 in lifetime earnings.
