Trot N.A. Cup Spring Book #3
"This year, there's a bunch of horses that could say 'I'm The Best' but there's not anybody that can say 'I'm Definitely The Best."
Somestarsomewhere finished his freshman season with four wins in his final six starts, including back-to-back sub-1:50 miles. One of those efforts was a track record at The Red Mile, the other established a new world record for a two-year-old pacing colt over a five-eighths mile track.
At 9-1, Somestarsomewhere comes in at #3 in Trot Magazine's 2014 Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book. Somestarsomewhere was installed in the Governor's Cup as the morning line choice before being scratched. Trainer Ron Burke told Trot Insider that the horse popped a curb, prompting the scratch.
Trot Insider touched base with Burke on his second of two North America Cup contenders.
Where was he turned out for the Winter?
"I sent all my trotters or any pacers that had any lameness issues down to Florida with my two-year-olds."
How has he recovered from the injury?
"He seems fine now. It took a little longer than it normally does, being honest. Usually, curbs, we can get them set pretty quick and it took him a little bit longer but since we had more time than we normally did, it didn't really bother me. I'm not worried about it now. We'll have to keep an eye on it for a little bit but I don't think it's a big deal."
Where are you at with him right now?
"He made it back to The Meadows last week, so he'll be at The Meadows for the next month or so."
Have you noticed any changes from last year to this year?
"He's always been a bit of a lazy horse, maybe he's a little bit more racy now. He's definitely sounder now than when we sent him down."
What does the qualifying schedule look like?
"At least two qualifiers, two to three. They have to start going so fast, it wouldn't be fair to them to come into the start and not be tight. I can't see me not qualifying him at least twice."
What will his early schedule look like leading up to the Pepsi NA Cup?
"Maybe an overnight at The Meadows then head up for the Somebeachsomewhere and the North America Cup."
What does his tentative schedule look like after the NA Cup?
"I've never had a horse that I did this with, and I'm going to do it both my colts (JK Endofanera and Somestarsomewhere) -- I'm going to shy away from small tracks. Usually I'd race anybody anywhere but they're both really big and I don't think the half-mile track is going to be a favour to either one of them."
