Track To Pay Millions After Jock’s Death
It has been reported that the family of a thoroughbred jockey that was killed on the racetrack in 2010 will be receiving roughly $8 million.
A report by CBS Philly explains that jockey Mario Calderon, 55, passed away after being thrown from a horse he was training at the Pennsylvania racetrack Parx Racing.
The verdict that a Philadelphia jury has reached includes $5 million in punitive damages.
The article states that the horse that Calderon was riding was spooked by chickens that were allowed to roam the track. The chickens were reportedly brought to the track many years ago by trainers and horse owners. It was found during the trial that Parx officials did not take all reasonable efforts to have the chickens removed from the grounds.
Calderon suffered 11 broken ribs and sustained bleeding from his brain as a result of the incident. After being thrown from the horse, Calderon was tangled in a stirrup and was repeatedly kicked by the horse.
