Scarborough Downs Survives Vote
On Thursday, March 6, Maine’s House of Representatives voted 78-62 against a motion to kill L.D. 1111, a bill which looks to allow slot-machine gaming at Scarborough Downs.
As a report by the Portland Press Herald explains, slot-machine gaming would only be allowed at Scarborough Downs if residents in the town where the track is located approve the gaming expansion via a vote.
The article states that an amendment was also tabled in the House. The amendment calls for a state-run licensing process for a resort casino to be introduced in southern Maine if the measure is approved via municipal referendum.
The report explains that the amendment would see the State of Maine give preference to a bidder that “has demonstrated experience in providing entertainment” through wagering on standardbred horse racing.
