'Gait Keeper’ Gene Mutation Analyzed
According to a study, researchers have determined that a horse’s gait is influenced by a genetic mutation which has been spread around the world by humans.
A report by phys.org has cited research from Animal Genetics which states that the mutation is found in the DMRT3 gene that controls a range of gaits.
The gene is informally know as the 'gait keeper.'
The article explains that the research and findings on the subject were by a team led by Dr. Leif Andersson of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
According to the report, the team, “analyzed 4,396 horses from 141 breeds around the world and found that the 'gait keeper' mutation is spread across Eurasia from Japan in the east, to the British Isles in west, on Iceland, in both South and North America, and also in breeds from South Africa.”
