Cullen Trainees Triple At Northlands
Northlands Park's 2013 leading horseman and O'Brien Award nominee Travis Cullen kicked off 2014 with three consecutive wins from his stable on Friday night at the Edmonton oval.
Cullen sent out four starters from his stable during Northlands Park's season opener with his first three scoring victories. He earned his first win of the year in the fourth race with four-year-old gelding Cabo Real ($2.50) converting from a pocket trip and later returned to take the sixth race with five-year-old mare Artxzipit ($5.30) after rallying home off cover. Philip Giesbrecht then drove four-year-old mare Sing Like An Angle ($20.20) to an upset win in the eighth for Cullen, circling the field after her stablemate broke stride.
Cullen also closed out the nine-race card driving five-year-old gelding Slender Pride ($11.60) wire-to-wire for trainer Blair Thomas.
Cullen was Canada's leading percentage trainer last year with an average of .433. He trained 120 winners with his horses earning just over $400,000 in purses during a breakout year. The 21-year-old horseman is one of two finalists for the O'Brien Awards' first Future Star Award.
