On A One-Horse Open Sleigh

While some Canadians have headed south for the Winter to escape the cold temperatures and train over more consistent surfaces, others have made the most of Mother Nature.

Mark Beaven sent Trot Insider these photos of Goldstar Badlands training in Dungannon, Ont -- northeast of Goderich. The three-year-old pacing colt is in-to-go on Sunday at Flamboro Downs, and was given some "resistance training" on Friday morning courtesy of a sleigh and trainer Heather Toll along with Shayna Toll and Allison Toll.

Thanks Robert....our farm is actually right next to the Dungannon Ag Society property and we reconditioned the old track back to being able use it as a training track. We knew that they used to race here years ago...but we were not aware of there being cutter races! Maybe we should bring them back! :-)

This a great story with even greater pictures !! and should warm everyone's heart on a cold winter's day . Well over 60 years ago ,I can recall riding around the track with my father's trainer Benny Larocque ,a native of Carman Manitoba . The "cutter" as we called it, had gone unused for many years and was stored away in my grandfather's barn but came in handy when the race horses came along . At one time, an annual race meet was held at Dungannon Ont. and many names still familiar such as the Geisels,Bill Gardner,Lloyd Turvey, the Feagans and McGees were among the race day participants .
