CDP Hosts Final Card Saturday; Bring Your Mementos
The Charlottetown Driving Park will hold its last card of racing on Saturday. First race post time is 1:00 p.m. The live harness racing season was scheduled to return on May 2, but Harness Racing PEI is applying to the Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission hoping for an April 25 start-up date after losing the January 17 date to frigid cold temperatures.
The 14-dash program has many highlights, including a dynamic top class, a newcomer to Charlottetown and three horses trying to keep their winning streaks alive.
Classifier Gerard Smith presents a feature event starring last week's winner Pans O Silver and regular pilot Brian MacPhee taking on challengers like Casual Motion, Rustleinthevines and Porthill Alf. Rebelryan, trained by Kevin MacLean, Vernon Bridge, has drawn the rail while Tanks A lot, owned by Austin and Macy Sorrie, Monatgue, and Negrito move up to take on the big boys this week. Now Whos Laughing has won three in a row for driver Vince Poulton and owners Gary Poulton and Gail MacDonald, Charlottetown but race analysts admit he'll need some racing luck to keep the streak alive.
The track has a newcomer. Smoke Show arrives from Flamboro Downs under the new ownership of John Quinn, Charlottetown. Stephen Quinn takes over the training duties from James MacDonald and will drive the four-year-old in his first appearance at the capital oval in Race 2. Awesome Bert ships in from Exhibition Park Raceway in Saint John, NB. Stephen Trites drives for trainer Robert MacNeil.
Kung Pao Chic is going for her third win in a row in the afternoon's trot division. Charles Symes of Springhill, NS owns and trains while Gary Chappell gets the driving assignment from Post 7. She's been solid with two wins and a second in her first three starts in 2009.
Special Education has been giving his competitors a lesson in top three finishes. The Glen Claybourne-trained pupil has three wins and three seconds in his last six starts. Wade Myers is back in the driver's seat this week from Post 4 in Race 11.

Bring Your Mementos To Charlottetown
The history committee of the PEI Colt Stakes will be on hand at the CDPEC on Saturday afternoon to receive any photos and other memorabilia of the past 75 years of Colt Stakes racing on PEI.
Photos, race programs, trophies, sale catalogues, caps, jackets and other mementos will be incorporated into a history book to be published in May, and also into a permanent exhibit at the CDPEC. Plans for the summer also include a portable touring exhibit that will travel to all matinee tracks to promote sales of the history book.
The public is invited to drop by the table set up in the CDPEC lobby where information on becoming a sponsor of the anniversary will be available. Sponsors will have the option of sponsoring races, breeders awards, and also supporting the book and exhibit projects. Sponsoring one of the anniversary events guarantees admission to the year end reception and Presidents Dinner as well as a first edition copy of the book.
