Credit Card Junkie Defeats Distaffers
Credit Card Junkie earned her second straight victory against Northlands Park's top pacing mares on Friday night in the featured 10th race.
Racing with a claiming tag of $22,500 in the $9,000 Fillies & Mares Open event, Credit Card Junkie and driver Gerry Hudon left from post three to establish the early lead through a :28.4 first quarter. However, the parked out A Special Lady (Kelly Hoerdt) took over command with outsider Keep The Dream and trainer/driver Keith Clark pressing on to find a spot in the pocket ahead of her stablemate Credit Card Junkie.
A Special Lady led the way to the half in :58.2 before being pressured by the pocket-pulling Keep The Dream.
A Special Lady was headed by Keep The Dream at the 1:27.3 third quarter mark, but Hudon swung Credit Card Junkie three-high around the final turn and drew off down the lane for the victory in 1:57 over a frozen track. Gts Jerilyn (Brandon Campbell) came on to place while Phoenician Gal (Travis Cullen) edged out Doober Hoozzitz (Paul Davies) in a photo for show. Keep The Dream finished fifth.
Credit Card Junkie was the 6-5 favourite and paid $4.40 to win.
The homebred Camystic mare is now nine-for-19 in her four-year-old campaign for Clark and partners Doris McDougall and Verne Rea. The win was her 21st lifetime and lifted her bankroll to $207,271.
Travis Cullen drove four winners on the 11-race card, including his own trainees Glitteronthebeach, the streaking Sing Like An Angel and Fancy Camelot. Meanwhile, Clark doubled up as his freshman filly Mystic Return edged out Cullen's Uncle Bob in the opener.
