Miss Prom Surprises In Bath Memorial Final

Sent off at odds of 42-1, Miss Prom pulled off a sweet surprise for her backers when she crossed the wire first in the $25,000 Penny Bath Memorial Final for four-year-old pacing mares on Saturday at Fraser Downs

.

The daughter of As Promised – No Dignity, who finished fifth in her elimination last week, got away seventh from Post 5 with owner James Burke at the lines. Silkys Got Promise (Darren Howald) set up shop on the front leading the field past the first quarter in :28.1.

As Silkys Got Promise rolled to the half in :57.3 shaking off a challenge from the parked Red Star Diamond (David McKellar), Miss Prom picked up cover in the form of the favourite, Caru Hanover (Brent Beelby), and advanced on the outside past three-quarters in 1:27.1.

At the top of the stretch, Miss Prom kicked into action sprinting home in :30.4 to beat out Caru Hanover by a neck in 1:58.2. Silkys Got Promise finished third.

Miss Prom, a winner of $40,091, picked up her second lifetime victory for trainer Heather Burke.

In the $17,000 Open Pace there were no surprises when Classy Character prevailed in 1:54.4.

The Tim Brown pupil shot off the gate from Post 8 and carved out fractions of :27.1., :56.2 and 1:25 as she battled with her stablemate, Born Again Dragon (Gord Abbott), for the win. Warrawee Iceman (Darren Howald) rounded out the top three.

The seven-year-old son of Shady Character scored her 27th career win and lifted her bankroll to $265,443 for owners Sandra Brown of Langley and Jack Thompson of Burnaby, B.C.
