Cullen Wins Five To Close Alberta Meet
Horseman Travis Cullen closed out Alberta Downs' 2013 meet with five wins on Saturday afternoon while securing both the Lacombe track's driving and training titles.
Cullen drove four of his own trainees as part of his five-bagger, including Canbec Hooligan ($6.90) in the second race, the streaking Raging Fingers ($3.40) in the ninth, repeating sophomore filly Sing Like An Angel ($5) in the 11th and Bob Watts ($11.30) in the 13th. Cullen also drove Vernon Sifert trainee Eternal Grace ($23.50) to an upset victory in the 12th race.
Amidst a career-best year, the Edmonton horseman concluded the Alberta meet with a chart-topping 64 training victories and 86 driving wins. Kelly Hoerdt finished second in the training standings with 53 wins while Brandon Campbell took runner-up honours in the driving category with 72 wins.
Drivers Hoerdt and James Jungquist were unseated in an accident during the afternoon's third race, but were able to return to drive later on the card. Hoerdt's trainee Modern Dance caused interference to Jungquist's mount Quick Kiss and Blue Monday (Connie Kolthammer) near the top of the stretch resulting in the accident.
