'Honeybee' Pulls Off A Sweet Surprise
Longshot Honeybee Hershey ($34.20) found the passing lane a sweet place to be on Wednesday night (October 16) and won the $8,500 Filly and Mares Open Pace at Batavia Downs in a lifetime-best clocking of 1:55.2.
Honeybee Hershey, starting from the rail with David McNeight III in the sulky, sat the garden spot through much of the race as Real Joy (Ron Beback Jr.) cut the fractions of :27.3, :56.2 and 1:25.1. In the stretch, Honeybee Hershey dipped into the passing lane and responded under the urging of McNeight III to register the one and a quarter length victory. Xenia Hanover (Ken Holliday), who was hurt at the start along with others as a breaking Youre Too Funny scattered the field, rallied to take the show position.
Owned by Vince Orlando and trained by Courtney Ohol, the six-year-old mare Blissful Hall-Original Artist mare has now won three times this season and increased her 2013 earnings to $20,601 and career bankroll to $96,283.
Live racing resumes on Friday evening with a 12-race program set to begin at 6:30 p.m. The feature will be the $7,000 Open II Trot where Haste drops down from Open company and is tabbed the 5-2 morning line favourite. Haste will be driven by Jim McNeight and will start from the five post.
