Ont.-Owned Word Power Wins NJ Futurity
George Brennan put odds-on favourite Word Power on the lead and coasted to victory in the $41,125 New Jersey Futurity on Saturday, October 12 at Freehold Raceway.
Word Power (sired by Western Ideal) won by two and a half lengths over Rockaholic (by Rocknroll Hanover) with a 10-length margin to Sky Is The Limit (by Western Ideal) in third. The mile was clocked in 1:53 flat.
Word Power returned $2.40 to win.
The win was the sixth of the year for the Larry Remmen trainee, who finished a neck behind 2012 Pacer of the Year Captaintreacherous in the $360,211 Cane Pace on September 2 at Tioga Downs.
Unraced at two, he has finished in-the-money in 10 of 13 starts, banking more than $256,000 for owner Bradley J. Grant of Milton, Ont.
This division of the New Jersey Futurity is restricted to New Jersey-sired three-year-old pacers and is sponsored by the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey.
The Saturday program also includes two $7,000 third leg New Jersey Sire Stakes-Green Acres divisions for two-year-old pacers and both were won by offspring of Rocknroll Hanover.
Rock Absorber, driven by Kyle DiBenedetto and trained by Robert Horowitz, won the colt and gelding division by three-quarters of a length over Cheyenne Seeber (by Rocknroll Hanover) in 1:57.2. The betting favourite, Card Shock (by Cams Card Shark), was third by three and a half lengths.
Rock Absorber is owned by Robert Horowitz, Brandon Horowitz and Brian Clark of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and Jeffrey Morris of Upper Mt Bethel, Pennsylvania.
In the filly split, Cut A Deal won by a length and a half over Tech Trade (by Western Ideal) and a length and three-quarters over third-place Ideal Helen (by Western Ideal) in 1:57.2. Ideal Helen had her winning streak snapped at four.
Cut A Deal, driven by Daniel Dube and trained by Chris Ryder, races for owner-breeder Diamond Creek Racing of Wellsville, Pennsylvania.
