Bird's Eye View Of Chantal's Win

How does it look to race a horse under saddle? Check out this video from Chantal Sutherland-Kruse's record-setting win at The Meadows on Monday.

Sutherland-Kruse broke the North American record for trotting under saddle on a five-eighths-mile track. One of thoroughbred racing’s most well known jockeys, she teamed up with Ron Burke's four-year-old trotting gelding DWs NY Yank to lower the record for a trotter under saddle to 1:59. The effort was one-fifth of a second faster than the previous North American record (1:59.1).

The video was produced by Equisight in cooperation with the United States Trotting Association. The crew stayed in the area and also captured the 16,000th win of driver Dave Palone one day later.

Palone has moved within range of international career wins leader Heinz Wewering, who boasts 16,889 victories (as of Sept. 20), according to Hauptverband fur Traber-Zucht, the German equivalent to the USTA or Standardbred Canada. That’s something of a moving target, since Wewering remains active in Europe.

“Ultimately, my goal is to catch Wewering, if it’s meant to happen,” Palone said. “I’d like to meet the guy and shake his hand because I know how hard he’s worked.”

In the mid 1970s we sent a pacer over from England to race, "Overdale GB" he did an exhibition race by himself over Greenwood, under sadle, and paced a mile in 2.01 back in the day.

What a breath of fresh air-Thank you Chantal, and to all involved:-) This wonderful accomplishment is a big plus for the entire industry. Chantal showed us that her talent does not limit itself to guiding a thoroughbred safely around an oval. Good luck to all involved tonight (Sat. Sept.28th) in demonstrating the "under saddle" exhibition at Mohawk Raceway. Please watch, it will be showcased after Race #2:-)
