Gingras Wins 3R Drivers' Tournament
The Hippodrome 3R drivers' tournament was over well before it finished on Sunday.
U.S.-based star Yannick Gingras, who started his career at the Trois-Rivières track, won three of the tournament's first four races to take an almost insurmountable lead.
Then he won the next two to seal the deal and almost took the final one as well, leading until deep stretch before getting nipped by Sylvain Lacaille and Deuce Man ($5.50).
Gingras' five winners were Corragio Hanover ($4,10), Charlie Drummond ($11), Fire Luck ($3.70), Mlle Tamara ($4.10), and Shes Got Style ($5.30).
He won from the front, the pocket and from off the pace, with perhaps his most skillful drive coming with Corragio Hanover, who he managed to extricate from a locked-in sixth down the backstretch and send to the lead on the final turn.
The other tournament win went to Pierre-Luc Roy and Lacaille Gabe ($78.50).
Gingras received $1,000 from the Québec Jockey Club as winner of the tournament and added a $175 track bonus for winning three times. Lacaille, who had a couple of seconds along with his victory, was the runner-up and got $500. Steeve Genois was third of the eight drivers who competed in the seven events on a cool, muddy day.
