Young Guns Final To 'Armani'
After a disastrous effort in the first leg and a narrow triumph in last week’s second leg, Talbotcreek Armani showed no mercy to the foes he faced in Sunday’s $21,900 final of the Young Guns Series at Sudbury Downs.
With Justin Turcotte at the controls, Talbotcreek Armani whacked out fractions of :27.4, :58.3 and 1:28.1 before turning on the jets and using a :28.2 closing quarter to win by five lengths in 1:56.3. No Shirt No Shoes was second, with Bilbo Hanover rounding out the top three finishers.
The John Pentland trainee, who was sent off at odds of 9-2, won for the second time in 19 starts this season. The three-year-old son of Dragon Again-Luck Of Michelle is owned by Natalie Pentland of Dorchester, ON. The homebred has banked just over $50,000 to date.
The undercard featured a pair of Preferred events, with Daddy Warbucks posting a narrow triumph in the $5,800 Preferred #2 for trainer/driver Gerry Belanger. The son of Western Hanover circled the field to win by a half-length margin over Shiny Mach in 1:56.2. Spartacus Jim tagged along to finish third.
Belanger Racing Stables of Barrie, ON owns the 23-time winner who is just short of $220,000 in lifetime earnings.
Carly Hollywood cruised to an easy win in the $4,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred #3 for driver Gerry Belanger and trainer James Belanger. The daughter of Camotion tracked cover before rushing by rivals and drawing clear to win by 2-3/4 lengths in 1:58.1. Awesum Best set the pace and finished second, with No Teasing Me taking home third prize.
Sent off at odds of 7-1, the distaffer won for the second time this season and for the sixth time in her career. The career winner of $83,443 is owned by Champlain Stables of Azilda, ON.
