Rookies Impress In Andrew Memorial

I C Caviar and Hope Chest won their respective divisions of the Blair Andrew Memorial series for two-year-old trotters Thursday at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Driver/trainer Joey Pineau sent I C Caviar to the front from the rail and went on to win by open lengths in 2:07.1 for owner Charles MacDonald. Usain Colt finished second while Lace finished third.

Hope Chest was able to knock off leader Ice Pop in an exciting deep stretch duel to win the second division of the Blair Andrew Memorial in 2:08.3. Walter Cheverie drove the two-year-old trotter for owner Sandra White. Blayne White is the trainer. Ice Pop was second with Lets Trade Ladies taking third place.

Scarlet Patti won the other trot contest on the card for driver Marc Campbell, trainer Darryl MacLean and owner Gordon MacLean. The time of the mile was 2:01.4.

The top guns of the night went to the gate in race 11 with Roscoes Child and Brodie MacPhee coming out on top in 1:57.3. MacPhee put the pacer in the pocket and followed fraction setter IDK through splits of :29, :58.2 and 1:27.3 before charging up the passing lane to secure the victory. Artist List was second with Blue Star Outlaw holding on for third. Roscoes Child recorded his fourth win of the season for trainer Raymond White and the Selkirk Stable of Belfast.

Brian MacPhee posted a driving triple on the program to move his career win total to 1,700 victories.

Racing returns Saturday in Charlottetown at 6 p.m. Red Shores Summerside will host their traditional Labour Day card Monday at 1 p.m.
