Grassroots Leaders To Square Off

Sudbury Downs fans are in for a treat on Sunday, August 11 when the Ontario Sires Stakes makes a stop at the northern oval.

Four divisions of three-year-old trotting fillies will battle for a total of $72,000 in Grassroots purse money, and the second heat is loaded with talent, including division co-leaders Muscle Magic and Oaklea Veronica who will start from Posts 2 and 3, respectively.

The duo earned their top ranking — which they share with Twin B Alibi — by scoring one win and one second in the first two Grassroots events. Both fillies prepped for Sunday’s contest in overnight events on August 2, with Muscle Magic finishing a hard-closing sixth at Mohawk Racetrack and Oaklea Veronica making an early error and finishing seventh at Grand River Raceway.

Rockwood resident Ben Baillargeon conditions Muscle Magic, a daughter of Muscle Mass, for his partners Nunzio Vena of Bolton and Santo Vena of Brampton, while Guelph resident Gregg McNair conditions Oaklea Veronica, a daughter of Pegasus Spur, for Bryan Lawrence of Hanover.

Hoping to keep both of the division leaders off the podium are Bop Too The Top and Orderingin. Bop Too The Top will benefit from Post 1 in Race 5 and arrives in Sudbury off a fifth-place finish against the colts in the August 3 final of the Dream of Glory Stakes at Hanover Raceway. In her first two Grassroots events, the daughter of Muscle Mass recorded a pair of third-place finishes. Bop Too The Top is trained by Peterborough resident John Bax for his partners Glengate Farms of Campbellville and Lorne Johnson of Cobourg.

Orderingin captured her division of the Grassroots season opener and then jumped up to the Gold Series where she also scored a win. Trainer Richard Moreau and owners Furious Farms of Repentigny, QC, Jean Mondoux of Blainville, QC and Normand Mondoux of Laval, QC opted to drop the daughter of Majestic Son back down to the Grassroots program however, and she will be looking for a third win from Post 7 on Sunday afternoon.

First-race post time for Sunday’s program is 1:30 p.m., and Sudbury Downs fans will see the three-year-old trotting fillies wage their Grassroots battles in Races 3, 5, 6, and 8.
